Let charity begin at home

I REFER to your report “Mother of 7 needs financial help” (NST, March 12) on the plight of a single mother in Sungai Bakau, Penang, who has a heart problem and is facing tremendous financial difficulties.

Although she gets some financial aid from the Social Welfare Department and a corporate leader, that is not enough because she has to spend most of the money on her medical ailment.

She has a daughter who is being treated for hypertension and renal impairment. The mother is appealing for financial aid to help her sick daughter seek medical treatment and to help the other children with their living and schooling expenses.

The NST should be applauded for highlighting the plight of families, especially single mothers, living in poverty. It is only through their revelation that good Samaritans are able to offer assistance
